Here’s to New Endings in 2014

I truly believe in the value of new beginnings, fresh starts, do-over’s, mulligan’s and game-on’s. Everyone and everything deserves a second chance or have the opportunity for change. The thing I think that most people forget sometimes in order to achieve change we must acknowledge the past or the history that has brought us to this very particular moment in time. Most often this includes acknowledging areas in our life’s in which we feel like we’ve missed the mark, failed, incomplete, walked away from, or simply ignored it and lived in denial.

Here we are, the first day of 2014 and many of us have staked our claim to what we are determined to become a reality within our lives in the next 365 days. The problem is we forget that we have 2013 to finish up….. or perhaps an accumulated multiple of years’ worth of unfinished business creating a greater hurdle in which to either avoid, jump over or plow through it.

There must be necessary endings in order to have new beginnings. If we fail to do this our goals and desire to achieve change will end in yet another failure, leaving us with more frustration, denial and will add to the baggage we ever so desire to unload. The problem is fear. Fear of letting go of the past – the very definition that once made our world go around. Fear of the unknown – not knowing what the future might bring. Fear of the guilt we carry – facing the ugly truth and finally fear of shame – what others will think if they knew where we have completely failed.

End it. Stop the fear in its tracks because it will deny you life. Fear is a lie anyway. It will deny you the opportunity to grow and succeed where there was once failure. Don’t let pride stop you from seeking help or support from those around you or from seeking the help from professionals to see through your desire to end what was and start fresh. Be vulnerable.

“Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy—the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.”
